February 24, 2013. The 85th Annual Academy Awards already starting up at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles with the red carpet. Tonight’s telecast will honor 50 years of James Bond with a musical offering including Adele singing the theme from the most recent Bond outing, ”Skyfall.” The LA Times noted with some chagrin that ”Skyfall” deserved more nominations than it got this time around and that a Best Picture nomination was truly deserved.
The reality is that Bond films have always gotten short shrift at the Academy Awards. Out of 7 total previous nominations, Bond films have only won 2 Oscars. However, considering past performance of the Bond franchise, ”Skyfall” has outperformed any previous Bond film.
”Skyfall” has a record 5 Oscar nominations including Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins), Best Original Score (Thomas Newman), Best Original Song (”Skyfall” music and lyrics by Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth), Best Sound Editing (Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers) and Best Sound Mixing (Scott Millan, Greg P. Russell, Stuart Wilson).
list and who the nominations lost to can be found at The James Bond 007 Museum.
