Judi Dench checks into ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’

1 Maj

There is no such thing as a weak performance from Dame Judi  Dench. Nor, it seems, is any character out of her range. Look at what she  did with the Alzheimer’s-plagued Iris Murdoch in “Iris,” or the stern and powerful M in a half-dozen James Bond films, or the kind and  patient Sybil Thorndike in “My Week  with Marilyn,” or her brief but riveting portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in “Shakespeare in  Love,” for which she won an Oscar.

In “The  Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” – opening Friday – Dench plays Evelyn Greenslade  who, recently widowed, finds out that her husband spent all of their money,  forcing her to sell their home and start over. Her decision is to begin living  life to the fullest, an idea that brings her, along with six other British  seniors, to the rundown hotel of the title, in Jaipur, India.

“Evelyn is an independent soul who feels that she still has a bit of life in  her,” said Dench, 77, last week in a New York hotel. “So she’s prepared to take  a chance.” The role in the dramatic comedy attracted Dench because it actually  provided her, not just her character, a chance.

“If you play one kind of a part, what happens is you get scripts rather  similar to that part,” she said. “What you long for, of course, is a script  which isn’t remotely like the last thing you’ve done. That’s what I would like  to do next. Something that isn’t in my ken.”

In “Marigold,” she not only gets to play a quietly independent yet charming  woman, but she also manages to fit in some adventure. There’s a wonderful scene  of her and Bill Nighy tearing through  the bustling streets of Jaipur on a small motorbike.

“That was most nerve-racking,” she said with a laugh. “On the back of that  motorbike, sitting sidesaddle, without a helmet on, being driven by Bill, who  was holding on with three fingers and waving with the other hand.”

There was also the adventure of just being in India, a place she had never  visited.

“My character says it’s an assault on the senses,” she recalled. “I’d never  even had a desire to go to India. But within 24 hours I was completely  fascinated and bewitched by the country. The beauty of the people was  outstanding. The color, the noise, the smell – everything about it is completely  staggering. And I can’t wait to go back there. I could retire in India. I’d be  off there tomorrow and put my feet up the chimney.”

Judi Dench’s James Bond character M is to meet her death in the next James Bond movie ‘Skyfall’.

The UK Daily Star is reporting an insider on the set as saying “we’ve just filmed M’s death scene”.

The newspaper is also reporting that Ralph Fiennes will become the new M.

Bernard Lee played the original M from ‘Dr No’ (1962) to ‘Moonraker’ (1979). Robert Brown took over the role in 1981 for ‘Octopussy’ and played M in four films to ‘License To Kill’ in 1989.

Dame Judi Dench has played the M character in the James Bond movies since 1995’s ‘GoldenEye’. That was also the first Bond movie to star Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. Dench took over in 1995 after the longest ever break between Bond films. She based her character on Stella Rimington, the first female real-life head of MI5 between 1992 and 1996.

‘Skyfall’ will be Dame Judi’s 7th Bond movie. She has also played the character in ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ (1997), ‘The World Is Not Enough’ (1999), ‘Die Another Day’ (2002), ‘Casino Royale’ (2006) and ‘Quantum of Solace’ (2008).

‘Skyfall’ is currently in production and will premiere on October 28, 2012.

In this movie James Bond’s loyalty to M is challenged over secrets from her past. MI6 is attacked and Bond must solve the treat alone.

Fiennes has remained tight-lipped about his role in the movie. Officially he is credited as playing “a government agent”.

Aston Martin DB5 spotted during James Bond filming in Scotland

It seems the iconic James Bond sports car, the Aston Martin DB5, will make an appearance in the latest movie Skyfall as the legendary car was spotted during filming for the movie in Scotland.

While the classy Aston Martin is a familiar figure in the James Bond movies, the car’s comeback in Skyfall will see it take on a different role as the vehicle was pictured armed up with machine guns, the first time the Aston Martin has been seen with a weapons dashboard.

It’s believed the Aston Martin sports car with its new machine gun accessory will be seen in a typical James Bond chase scene for the upcoming new movie. The DB5 has appeared in numerous Bond films in the past including Thunderball, Casino Royale and Goldfinger.

Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench were both photographed shooting a scene in the Scottish Highlands. The actors braved the cold to film scenes for the Skyfall movie which is due to be released at the end of the year, marking the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise.

The silver Aston Martin DB5 also sported the BMT 216A registration plate, the same license plate number as was first seen on the sports car’s debut in 1964’s Goldfinger when Bond was played by Sean Connery.
