Danke, Abba, lieber Vater.

Sweden’s oddest tourist attractions, James Bond Museum Nybro…

17 Jan

James Bond Museum Most people in western society are familiar with the charming British secret agent James Bond, 007. Six actors have worn the Bond suit since the first movie was released in 1962, and the 23rd film is currently in the making. At the James Bond museum in Nybro in southern Sweden, you can be sure to find everything there is to know about this action phenomenon. It was founded in 2003 by a man named Gunnar Schäfer, who, being a bit of a ”Bond-fanatic”, added James Bond to his name

”I would rather die at sea than in Russia”
I’ll still die in Russia, a bullet will kill me, I may as well die in the sea. So said the 46-year-old silver valley shoemaker John Schaefer to himself for 14-years ago, stepped out into the Eastsea and ran from the war in Denmark to freedom in Sweden.
John Schaefer was a German sailor for six years.

James Bond is alive and well and living in the south east of Sweden.

25 Nov

James Bond is alive and well and living in the south east of Sweden.

Schäfer, Gunnar Schäfer has just been given the all clear from the tax board to make some alterations to his name.

He may now officially refer himself as Nils Gunnar Bond James Schäfer. Or Bond, James Bond for short.

If ever Sweden was to have its own 007, Gunnar Schäfer has long seemed the most likely candidate.

In 1959 Schäfer’s father, who had been a German secret service agent during the Second World War, disappeared in mysterious circumstances.

”It was the time of the Cold War. He went away on holiday and we never heard from him again. Perhaps somebody wanted him dead. I just don’t know,” Schäfer told The Local.

The loss of his father at a very young age is intimately linked to his life-long interest in 007.

In 1965, the eight-year-old Schäfer settled down to watch ‘Goldfinger’ with his older brother. The experience was to alter his young life.

”I began to compare Ian Fleming’s life to that of my father. I read the novels and found all the similarities.

”Like my father, Fleming had also been a secret agent. He became a sort of mentor to me.

”‘Goldfinger’ helped me to get on with my life and it brought me closer to my father,” he said.

Gunnar Schäfer’s fascination with all things Bond is evident in every aspect of his life.

For example, his mobile phone number ends with the digits 007.

One of his cars, the original BMW used in ‘Goldeneye’, is registered 007 JB.

And just like Ian Fleming’s Jamaican estate, Schäfer’s house in Kalmar is called ‘Goldeneye’.

He also dresses like Bond. At least once a week he puts on his dinner jacket and sits down to watch a 007 classic.

”Sometimes I’ll drink a dry martini. But usually I pour myself a glass of Bollinger champagne, which was Albert Broccoli’s favourite drink and also something Bond is quite fond of,” said Schäfer.

When he’s not being Bond, Gunnar Schäfer runs a car parts business in Nybro. It was here that he first began displaying some of the memorabilia for the world’s first 007 museum.

”It was in 2002, when ‘Die Another Day’ was about to come out. I set aside a small space in my shop”.

The embryonic museum was later moved to a much larger premises. Spread over 350 square metres of exhibition space, the museum now houses a cinema, games consoles and a casino, as well as an impressive array of 007 artifacts ranging from cars to specially designed glasses.

But what about 007’s famed collection of short-term girlfriends? Does Schäfer share his hero’s handy knack of proving irresistible to the opposite sex?

”Yes and no,” he laughed.

”They are often very curious, even the ones who don’t like 007.

”After they meet me and I tell them the story about my father they usually end up liking Bond,” he said.

Gunnar Schäfer celebrated his 50th birthday at the end of March. Visit his website to find out more about the Swedish James Bond and his 007 museum.

James Bond donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation

1 Nov

Bond donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

Gunnar Bond James Schäfer has donated SEK 25 000 to juvenile diabetes fund. For it , he received Izabella Scorupcos bikini from the movie Goldeneye .
– I’m very happy that it was auctioned in Sweden and not in England. Since I had never been able to afford it, says Nybro own Bond.

It is a proud and expectant Gunnar Schäfer , telling the news . For Scorupcos white bikini from the film Goldeneye from 1995 has not yet delivered.
– There are many who previously have asked if they can buy it with no answer . Only now when the money would go to charity Scorupco went to sell it, says Gunnar Schäfer.
The dress was auctioned in Stockholm and Gunnar Schäfer had traveled to Stockholm and gala to try to shout into it. But at the door he was told no . It was only by invitation . He was referred to the bidding by proxy.
– It was just a bunch of celebrities who were there to Crown Princess Victoria was there. They did not have any interest in paying for Scorupcos bikini. But I bought it anyway , says Gunnar Schäfer.
The final price SEK 25 000 surprised Schäfer. He had expected a very different price .
– A Bond dresses sold in London cost ten times as much.
The Gunnar Schäfer gladly take the role of Bond ‘s common knowledge but who may assume Scorupcos role as Natalya Simonova is the question ?

Meet the Scandinavian James Bond

The name’s Bond. James  Bond. Licensed to… operate a James  Bond 007 museum above a car-parts shop in Nybro.

Meet the Scandinavian James Bond

Text by Steve Vickers

The glamorous destination is a staple of the James Bond movie. But my quest for 007 has led me to the small Swedish city of Nybro, population 13,000, and to an auto shop on an industrial estate.

When I arrive, snowflakes still melting on my clothes, I enter to find the place deserted and silent. I decide to take a look around. On the left-hand side of the garage space are shelves stacked with regular car accessories: brake disks, replacement headlamps, plastic bottles of motor oil and the like. Over on the other side of the room, however, things get considerably more interesting – there are martini glasses, packs of playing cards, bottles of aftershave, books, posters and other items of merchandise, every little bit of it etched, emblazoned, stamped or printed with a 007TM logo. Engrossed in all the Bond paraphenalia, I’m startled when a figure appears at the back of the workshop, scaring the living daylights out of me.

It’s Bond.

I resist the urge to say I’ve been expecting him, and stretch out my hand in greeting. This is the man formerly known as Gunnar Schäfer, but following a successful change of name in 2007, now Gunnar Bond James Schäfer. To colleagues and locals, it’s plain Mr Bond, including at the neighbourhood pizzeria, where he convinced the owners to create a special 007 pizza.

The 56-year-old Swede actually makes a very passable, Timothy Daltonesque Bond – he’s slim and strong looking, with a chiselled jaw and sweptback hair – but this is obviously a dress-down day. Instead of the tuxedo, he’s wearing a black zip-up cardigan and plain black trousers, like something Bond might wear after an alpine ski session. Or a day spent doing odd jobs in a shop that sells car parts.

It’s not just a car-parts shop though – the space also doubles as Gunnar’s very own James Bond museum and gift shop. ”I thought we could start with a little video,” he says and leads me through to a 20-seat cinema. From the self-produced film that follows, it becomes clear that this Bond thing is more than just a hobby.

He drives a car with the number plate 007 JB. He named his house GoldenEye, after Bond author Ian Fleming’s Jamaican residence, and has the number 007 above the door. Confusingly, he actually lives at number ten.

Gunnar dates the start of his obsession to 1965, when his older brother took him to see his first Bond film. Its fruition didn’t come until almost 40 years later, when in 2003 he opened his museum.

The impressive collection runs to some 40,000 pieces and includes a pistol used in The Man with the Golden Gun, a 007 toilet with Bond silhouette in mosaic on the floor, and a bar area, where vodka martinis are served to Bond fans and non-fans alike, along with the opportunity to play blackjack in Gunnar’s mini Casino Royale.

Fittingly for a man with a front as a car-parts salesman, the best exhibits are the vehicles. As well as a racing-green Jaguar E-type made in 1962 – the same year Dr No was released – Gunnar owns the actual metallic blue BMW Z3 Pierce Brosnan drove for the filming of GoldenEye. This car, Gunnar says, is the single most expensive item in a collection he estimates to be worth between SEK5 and SEK10 million (€590,000-€1.18m).

As we chat, he opens up more about the reasons for wanting to be like Bond and his creator Ian Fleming, who he affectionately calls ”Papa Fleming”.

”When I was two years old, my dad went to Germany to find his relatives,” he explains. ”We never heard anything from him again. Interpol searched for him for 10 years before they declared him dead. I still don’t know what happened to him.

”I became fascinated with Fleming’s stories and started comparing Fleming with my dad. I don’t know what my dad experienced, but I could dream that Fleming’s stories matched with his.”

Although he’s never stopped searching for clues about the past, Gunnar has his sights set on the future. His website attracts millions of Bond fans every year and he’s hoping to take some of his exhibits on tour to other parts of the world.

He’s even going to start making more appearances as a lookalike. And, of course, he wants to collect more stuff. For a Bond obsessive like Gunnar, it seems the world is not enough.  www.007museum.com
