Review: Released at the pinnacle of Bond fever, Thunderball      is the one of the best and most popular of all the Bond films. With its      exotic locals, beautiful women (both bad and good), a sinister villain,      casino scenes, fast cars, big explosions and the original Bondian      underwater fight, Thunderball was such a success that shortly after      its release the Paramount Theater in New York City had to run the film 24      hours a day to meet the demand.

James Bond matches wits with a charming but sinister tycoon who is holding the world nuclear hostage as part of a diabolical plot by SPECTRE. Connery’s return to  the world of Bond after 12 years is smooth in this remake of ”Thunderball”  hampered by an atrocious musical score. Carrera is stunning as Fatima  Blush. Although Connery is back, purists will have qualms considering this part of the ”official” Bond series since longtime Bond          producer, Albert ”Cubby” Broccoli, had nothing to do with this endeavor. Sean Connery is back for his final performance as superagent James Bond in this high-velocity action thriller from the director Kevin  McClory..

When two atomic warheads are  hijacked by the evil SPECTRE organization, Agent 007 is hurled into an          explosive, pulse-pounding race to save the world from nuclear   terrorists!

Never Say Never Again is NOT considered one of the official Bond films. The ”official”  Bond films are made by MGM/UA and at least one Broccoli. Never Say Never Again was made by Warner Bros and no Broccoli’s worked on it. In fact, the film was released at the same time as Octopussy as a rival. It was a  remake of Thunderball. That is not to say that it wasn’t a good movie, just not one of the ”official” series.

• Kevin McClory had the rights to remake Thunderball (but            no other Bond film) because of his collaboration with Ian Fleming.            This film is not part of the regular franchise.
• Connery said he’d never play Bond again. His wife helped convince            him otherwise and came up with the title as well.
• The casino where Bond and Largo square off in a videogame battle            (baccarat is old, apparently) is named Casino Royale.

Vodka martini, ”shaken not stirred” – often said as part of a bad Sean Connery impersonation – is one of the most quotable lines from Bond.

Yet Her Majesty’s top secret agent’s love of the bottle would leave him impotent and at death’s door.

Doctors analysing the Ian Fleming novels show James Bond polishes off the equivalent of one and a half bottles of wine every day.

They say he is not the man to trust to deactivate a nuclear bomb.

Doctors in Derby and Nottingham sat down to read the 14 Bond novels in their spare time.

With a notebook at hand they charted every day and every drink.

Excluding the 36 days Bond was in prison, hospital or rehab, the spy downed 1,150 units of alcohol in 88 days.

It works out at 92 units a week – about five vodka martinis a day and four times the recommended maximum intake for men in the UK.

The doctors’ report in the festive edition of the British Medical Journal concluded: ”Although we appreciate the societal pressures to consume alcohol when working with international terrorists and high stakes gamblers, we would advise Bond to be referred for further assessment of his alcohol intake.”

Patrick Davies, a consultant in paediatric intensive care at Nottingham University Hospitals, told the BBC: ”You wouldn’t want this person defusing a nuclear bomb.

”He’s a very glamorous person, he gets all the girls and that’s totally incompatible with the lifestyle of an alcoholic, which he is.”

He said Bond would be classified in the ”top whack” of problem drinkers and would be at high risk of liver damage, an early death and impotence.

”So he might be practising safe sex after all,” said Dr Davies.

From Russia with vodka

He also had a ”Drink and Let Drive” habit after consuming 39 units in Casino Royale then crashing in a high-speed car chase and needing two weeks in hospital.

On his biggest bender, Bond had 50 units in a single day during From Russia With Love and only 13 days in all the novels were free of the sauce.

Charting James Bond’s drinking habits with age, he starts off drinking heavily in Casino Royale (1953) before seemingly starting to get his life in order as he heads towards Goldfinger (1959).

However, his intake starts to soar again and peaks at 132 units a week in You Only Live Twice (1964).

The researchers argue this may be a response to the death of his wife a year earlier in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

They say the study is light-hearted, and did not interfere with their day jobs, but raises an important message about alcohol.

Excessive alcohol consumption is thought to cause 2.5 million deaths every year around the world.

”The level of functioning as displayed in the books is inconsistent with the physical, mental, and indeed sexual functioning expected from someone drinking this much alcohol,” the doctors said.

Den        förste skådespelare som gestaltade James Bond var inte        alls Sean Connery utan en idag närmast helt        bortglömd, norskättad amerikan vid namn Barry        Nelson.

Ian Flemings första        Bond-roman, ”Casino Royale,” gavs ut i        England 1953 och i USA året därpå.         Ian Fleming sålde snabbt filmrättigheterna till romanen        till tv-bolaget CBS för endast 1000 dollar. Redan året        därpå, 1954, visades som en tv-film i USA.

Den 21 oktober 1954, kl        20.30, visades i amerikansk tv en timslång omarbetning        av Casino Royale i form av en direktsänd        teaterpjäs. Programmet ingick i serien ”CBS        Climax Mystery Theater”, där man varje vecka        sände spänningshistorier i teaterform.        Direktsändningen medförde givetvis vissa begränsningar        i återgivningen av bokens intrig. Filmen var uppdelad i        tre akter för att ge utrymme för reklamavbrott.
Regissören hette William H Brown och programmet        presenterades av William Lundigan. Man hade tagit        sig vissa friheter med Flemings originaltext. Bond var        här en amerikansk agent och hade fått öknamnet        ”Card Sense Jimmy Bond”. Felix Leiter hade        blivit brittisk agent, men hade fått förnamnet        Clarence.

Bond spelades alltså        av Barry Nelson, medan skurken Le Chiffre spelades        av ingen mindre än Peter Lorre, känd från        storfilmer som ”Casablanca”. Linda        Christian hade den kvinnliga huvudrollen som Valerie        Mathis (i boken heter hon ju Vesper Lynd). Intrigen        följde annars romanen rätt väl och utspelades i Monte        Carlo vid baccarat-bordet.         En hel del övertydliga förklaringar av casinospel fick        läggas in i filmens dialog eftersom tv-publiken inte        automatiskt kunde förväntas känna till hur man t ex        spelar Baccarat eller Chemin de fer.

Det bästa med den här        tv-filmen är Peter Lorres utmärkta insats som skurken        Le Chiffre. Det är synd att Lorre aldrig fick tillfälle        att spela Bondskurk i någon av de ”riktiga”        Bondfilmerna.         En kul incident inträffade under direktsändningen,        beroende på ett tekniskt fel: Efter att Le Chiffre        blivit skjuten, dröjde kameran av misstag kvar vid Lorre        tills han reste sig upp och började gå till sin loge!

TV-programmet vållade        ingen uppståndelse, fick halvbra kritik och glömdes        sedan bort. Länge trodde man att inget bevarats till        eftervärlden av denna version av Casino Royale.
En filmsamlare vid namn Jim Shoenberger gick 1981        igenom gamla filmburkar med innehåll som skulle kastas,        och återupptäckte då en välbevarad upptagning av        programmet. Om det inte hade angivits        ”svart/vitt” på filmburken, hade Shoenberger        kastat bort innehållet i tron att det var 1967 års Casino        Royale-film. Han upptäckte då att filmrullen        innehöll 1954 års tv-film.

Det gamla TV-programmet        visades sedan offentligt för första gången i juli 1981        vid en James Bond Weekend i Los Angeles. Barry Nelson var        inbjuden hedersgäst.         ”Min roll var illa skriven, utan charm eller        någonting. Min entré i programmet var verkligen komisk        och det var inte bra, för det var inte alls        meningen”, sade Nelson i en intervju.

Casino Royale        från 1954 finns utgiven på köpvideo, men måste trots        allt betraktas som kuriosa och enbart något för de        allra mest hängivna Bond-fansen. De flesta tillgängliga versionerna av den här tv-filmen saknar lustigt nog den sista minuten, som försvunnit. För att få tag i den kompletta upptagningen av Casino Royale från 1954 får man jaga en amerikansk VHS- eller DVD-version, utgiven av Spyguis.

Resultatet av detta biobesök var ett livslångt intresse för James Bond och i museet ser man resultatet av fyrtio års samlande av allehanda föremål med anknytning till 007; guldtackor, spionkameror, Spectres ring, Hajens tänder, böcker och autografer.

Gunnar Schäfer som förestår muséet har vigt sitt liv åt Bond och t.o.m. tagit sig ett nytt namn: Gunnar James Bond Schäfer. Det Gunnar inte vet om James Bond finns inte. Han har också alldeles klart för sig vilken som är bästa filmen, bästa bondlåten, snyggaste skurken etc. Och det är faktiskt inte Sean Connery som vinner Gunnars filmlista utan Goldeneye med Pierce Brosnan i rollen som agenten som alltid klarar sig.

P4 Kulturs reporter Håkan Jäder frågar om Gunnar menar allvar när han säger att han aldrig ska gifta sig. Ja, för det gjorde inte James Bond, får han till svar.

Rare James Bond Manuscript Heading To Auction

A rare James Bond manuscript featuring hand-written corrections by author Ian Fleming is going under the hammer in London later this month (Dec12).

Fleming gifted the copy of Diamonds Are Forever, which was made into a 1971 film starring Sir Sean Connery, to his secretary Ulrica Knowles along with a first edition of the finished book.

The manuscript features notes and corrections from Fleming as well as drastic storyline changes.

It is expected to fetch around $128,000 (£80,000) when it is sold at Sotheby’s on 12 December (12), along with the first edition book, which has an estimated sale price of $14,400 (£9,000).
